Energy Costs Skyrocketing? Save Money With These Simple Tips
Today’s light bulbs are far more efficient and cost effective than those of days gone by. The new bulbs cost more initially, but they will pay for themselves in energy savings and by their long life span. Replace those old bulbs with new ones as they burn out. This is one great way to reduce that energy bill.
Use lower watt bulbs. Most households make the mistake of leaving lights on, or having a night light that really isn’t a small light for night use. Often the bathroom light is just left on. You can eliminate a large portion of your electric use by having real night lights installed. These are the ones with the Christmas tree bulb type of light. You can even wire in a new line with strategically placed small bulbs to light up your hallway, bathroom and stairways if you have the know how. The lighting you need here is only enough so you don’t step on something as you make your way to the bathroom at night. You don’t need to light up the whole house.
Do you have a chandelier or other multiple bulb lights? Reduce the wattage of these bulbs so that when they are on you get enough light from them to see as well as you have to see. Often these are loaded up with multiple 60 or 100 watt bulbs when a 40 would do the job.
An open refrigerator door is a huge loss of energy. Each time the door opens cold air spills out into the room. This cold air then needs to be replaced so your groceries can stay cold. Make the family understand that standing at the fridge with the door open is wasting electricity.
Turning lights off is one area where we probably all would plead guilty. It never fails that we enter a room, turn the light on and then leave the room with the light on. It’s human nature but it is also a huge waste of electricity. I often see my house with four rooms fully lit up with a couple of TVs running when there is no one in them. Get past this situation.
Motion sensors can really turn up the savings. A club that I belong to has installed them into all the rooms that don’t get used a lot, but people are always going into. Over the years whoever was there first would enter a room and turn the light on … then it would stay on until closing time, and even sometimes all night. With the motion sensors installed the lights will come on as soon as you walk into the room and they go off a few minutes after you leave. Think about it … I think the club has saved over 1000% from this one simple upgrade alone.
The use of timers will save you money in those instances where lighting will stay on longer than it is needed. You can set a timer to go on and off at set intervals of time. The most obvious use would be to have it set to go on at dark and then off at dawn.
All of these ideas are good solid money saving tips. With the economy like it is today there are more and more people looking to save a few bucks on their energy bills. Many of these tips will save a considerable amount of money if you can implement them and stay with it.
